Sedum rupestre 'Angelina' is a fast-growing, evergreen succulent groundcover featuring vibrant chartreuse-to-golden, needle-like foliage that turns orange-red in winter. Growing 3–6 inches tall and spreading up to 24 inches, it thrives in full sun and well-drained, dry soil, making it ideal for rock gardens, containers, and xeriscaping in USDA Zones 3–11.
Care Requirements & Growing Conditions
- Light: Thrives in full sun, which brings out the brightest yellow color. It can tolerate light or partial shade.
- Water: Drought-tolerant once established; water sparingly, only when the soil is dry to prevent root rot.
- Soil: Prefers poor to average, well-drained, sandy, or rocky soil.
- Maintenance: Low maintenance, but you can trim leggy stems in spring to maintain a tight, dense mat.
- Spacing: Plant 9–18 inches apart to allow for rapid filling.
Growth and Hardiness
- Growth Rate: Fast-growing.
- Size: Typically 3–6 inches tall (up to 8 inches when blooming) and 1–2 feet wide.
- Hardiness Zone: Hardy in USDA Zones 3-11.
- Characteristics: It is a low-growing, spreading, creeping sedum that works well for controlling erosion on banks, in containers, or as a vibrant, year-round, or trailing plant. It spreads by creeping stems that root where they touch the ground.
Usage in Landscaping
- Groundcover: Creates a dense, weed-suppressing carpet.
- Containers: Adds a bright, cascading effect to mixed containers and hanging baskets.
- Rock Gardens: Excellent in dry, rocky spots.
- Winter Color: In colder climates, it adds dramatic orange, red, or ginger-brown tones in the fall and winter.
