By far my favorite because of the bright colors that show up in the fall.
October Daphne Sedum (Sedum sieboldii or Hylotelephium sieboldii) is a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant, mound-forming succulent. It is prized for its round, blue-green foliage with pink edges that turns orange-bronze in fall, topped with star-shaped pink flowers in October. It thrives in full sun, grows 3–12 inches tall, and is hardy in zones 3–9. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Key Care & Growing Tips
- Light: Thrives in full sun (at least 6 hours direct sun) but tolerates light shade.
- Soil: Requires well-drained, average, or rocky soil; prefers neutral to alkaline pH.
- Watering: Drought-tolerant once established; water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry out between waterings.
- Spacing: Space plants 12–18 inches apart for groundcover.
- Maintenance: Trim back dried stems and flower heads in early spring.
- Uses: Ideal for rock gardens, containers, edging, and hanging over walls. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Characteristics
- Foliage: Distinctive whorls of three, scalloped, silvery-blue leaves.
- Bloom Color: Pink.
- Fall Interest: Foliage turns pink/red before the plant dies back to the ground in winter.
- Pest/Diseases: Generally pest-resistant but can attract aphids or snails.
- Hardiness: Zones 3–9, often cited as Hardy to -12°C or lower.
- Resistance: Deer and rabbit resistant. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
